A STORY BY HIROKO WACHI - An English Advanced 1 student
Would you just leave us alone…?

What I am about to tell you happened more than fifteen years ago, and it was the last time I ever went to a disco.

That night, I met Sachiko at Tokyo station in order to visit a place called “Maharajah”. It was a new and gorgeous disco near the sea. Inside there were brilliant light balls hung from a very high ceiling and bubbles and sparks were everywhere. But the thing which had taken my breath away was a huge chandelier which was hung just above the centre of the dance floor. Under the chandelier, hundreds of people were dancing frenetically and I tell you, I was one of them.

But then, it had been less than thirty minutes when Sachiko told me that she was not feeling well. I thought she might have felt a bit suffocated by the multitude of people dancing around. So I told her to sit down for a while, but she insisted that she was feeling sick and we should leave the place as soon as possible. I was not very happy, but we ended up in a small cafe where we spent the rest of the night talking about things had happened since we left the University. I felt a bit awkward because she was very sick only ten minutes ago, but now she seemed fine. I wondered what might have happened with her in the disco...

Well, within a week, newspapers and T.V. news covered an accident at a newly opened disco, “Maharajah”. Yes, the one I went to with Sachiko.
They reported that hundreds of people were injured and quite many were dead or still buried under the collapsed building. The big chandelier fell down and cut in half people´s bodies who were unfortunately dancing at that very moment.

When I called Sachiko she told me that she knew something would happen there soon or later. She said that she could see many dead people wondering between dancing people. She could feel the strong existence of anger and frustration that made her feel sick. Then, just before she hung up, she said, “They had been sleeping at that site for a long time, but now they have been woken up by the loud noise of the disco. They do not like that. They want people to go away. They just want to be left alone …, you know?”

Well, I did not take her comment seriously at that time, but eventually I had to admit what she told me was true.

I heard that, when the rest of the building was finally moved away, they found a lot of bones all over the place. It was said that they were buried just a few meters deep and seemed to have been there for a long time.

Do you think the building fell down due to the construction company´s fault, or do you think what my friend, Sachiko told me was the cause of the tragedy?
Well, I certainly believe my friend and in life after death.

This is why I do not and will never go to discos for the rest of my life.
